This latest version delivers targeted improvements to archive detection, usability, and reliability, addressing key issues reported by users and refining everyday workflows for power users and IT professionals alike.
Smarter Archive Recognition
WinRAR 7.21 improves how the software handles archives that have been given incorrect file extensions. Where previous versions could display nested contents, the software now correctly identifies the true format of the host archive and displays it as expected. This ensures consistent, predictable behavior regardless of how files have been named or moved.
A More Intuitive File Browser
This release brings WinRAR’s file list sorting in line with Windows Explorer conventions. Clicking the size or time columns now defaults to descending order, placing the largest files and most recent dates at the top. Compression is also smarter: the -s=e switch now performs case-insensitive extension matching on Windows, keeping files like .JPG and .jpg within the same solid compression group for better efficiency.
Cleaner Handling of Edge Cases
WinRAR 7.21 quietly handles situations that previously caused unnecessary errors. Self-extracting archives that require administrator privileges now exit cleanly if the elevation prompt is cancelled, rather than surfacing a folder access error.
Bug Fixes for Greater Reliability
Several issues from version 7.20 have been resolved in this release:
- A regression that could corrupt solid RAR4 archives during file deletion has been fixed, with those archives now repacking fully as in earlier versions.
- A rare crash when compressing large amounts of poorly compressible data has been eliminated.
- Additional fixes include: correct unpacking of ZIP archives containing file comment fields, proper operation of the -tl switch with the “ch” command, automatic renaming of files with reserved Windows device names on extraction, and a correction to the settings export dialog that previously overwrote folder shortcuts with settings data.
